(FOX40.COM) — There is more room for animals to swing around and thrive at the Sacramento Zoo.
The Sacramento Zoo held a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the renovation of its orangutan habitat.
It’s been more than a year of planning and six months of physical work.
The improved area comes with new platforms, climbing features and a pond for the primates to cool off during the hot summer days.
The habitat is home to three orangutans: Makan and Hinda, who are 42 and 23, along with Shelly, who is 54.
The improved orangutan exhibit is now open to the public.
“It just meets their daily needs, stimulates their mental activity, stimulates their physical activity, and each part of this design was done with their natural behaviors in mind, how they move, how they like to spend their time,” said Matt McKim, the chief animal programs officer at the zoo. “It’s been a real success.”
Zoo officials said the renovations were entirely made possible by supporters and the more than 1,000 donors.
They’re now working on phase two of the orangutan project, adding a new shade structure and installing new interpretive and educational opportunities that tie it all together.
