Organizers of the annual Garden Grove Strawberry Festival said, for the most part, the four-day festival is still happening this Memorial Day weekend, but Friday announced this morning parade and Strawberry Stomp 5K have been postponed to a date yet to be set.

Activities got underway Friday while more than 4 1/2 miles away, residents and businesses of the West Garden Grove area were being evacuated while first responders dealt with a leaking 34,000-gallon chemical tank containing methyl methacrylate, a flammable, volatile chemical used in plastics and manufacturing at an aerospace plant on Western Avenue. There were concerns that the tank could explode or have a large spill of the toxic material.

As of Friday evening, across town at Village Green Park on Main Street, event organizers said the Strawberry Festival, which typically attracts about 250,000 people over its four-day course, is “still happening,” but the parade and 5K would not go on as planned.

It was a “logistical” decision, festival director Jeff Sanders said, “the police are focusing their efforts (across town). It would be too much of a nightmare if, say, that thing blew up tomorrow, and then we have a parade with a ton of people.”

Mayor Stephanie Klopfenstein said in a statement that the decision was made to keep city resources “focused where they are needed most.”

“We appreciate the public’s understanding and continued support of the Strawberry Festival and all of the individuals who help make this event such a special tradition for Garden Grove,” she said.

The festival, Garden Grove’s biggest annual event, is in its 66th year. The festival has a shopping area, youth rides and rides for the more adventurous, carnival games, lots of food for sale and more.

Sanders is asking attendees to check the Strawberry Festival Facebook page for event updates.

“But we’re still running the rest of the festival,” he said. “As of right now, we’re open.”
