One southbound lane on the Vincent Thomas Bridge — between Ferry Street and Harbor Boulevard — will be closed overnight beginning Friday, Oct. 10, for road repairs on the bridge finger joints.

Hours for the closure are 7 p.m. Friday to 6 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 10-11.

The closure, announced by the California Department of Transportation was delayed from a planned closure previously set for earlier this month.

Finger joints are a type of expansion joint designed to accommodate the bridge deck expanding and contracting because of temperature changes, consisting of interlocking steel plates, resembling fingers, that slide over each other, allowing for movement and maintaining the driving surface.

Motorists should expect delays when using the bridge, which runs from San Pedro to Terminal Island.

Motorists should use Caltrans QuickMap to review current traffic conditions before traveling. Caltrans reminds drivers to exercise increased caution near the closure and to slow down for cone zones.
