OAKLAND — A man suspected of carjacking a pickup truck in East Oakland, dragging the 76-year-old owner for a half block Tuesday evening, was arrested several hours later in San Francisco after crashing the vehicle which was being followed by a California Highway Patrol airplane, authorities said.

Both the truck owner and suspect were hospitalized. Their conditions were not immediately available.

The carjacking happened about 5:15 p.m. Tuesday in the 1900 block of 41st Avenue. According to initial police reports, the owner was unloading a piece of furniture from the truck which was parked outside his residence with the driver’s door open and the keys in the ignition.

A car pulled up and the 31-year-old suspect got out, got into the truck and began driving away. Another person inside the car, believed to be a woman, drove off and was being sought.

According to the initial reports, the truck owner grabbed onto the passenger side of the vehicle, trying unsuccessfully to get the suspect to stop. The owner was dragged a half block or so before letting go and falling off, suffering numerous cuts and other injuries, according to the initial reports.

The pickup truck continued on without stopping. It went into Alameda where it was seen about 7:45 p.m. by Alameda police near the Park Street Bridge going into Oakland.

Alameda police pursued the truck for about a mile on Oakland streets before turning the chase over to a CHP airplane, authorities said.

With the aircraft overhead radioing information to ground units, the truck drove in East Oakland before getting onto a freeway and driving to Richmond, then getting back on the freeway, authorities said.

The truck went across the Bay Bridge and into San Francisco, driving southbound on Highway 101, authorities said.

The truck exited the freeway in San Francisco at high speed and crashed in the 1900 block of Carroll Avenue in the Bayview district, where the driver was arrested, authorities said. He was taken to an Oakland hospital for treatment of various injuries and had holds placed on him for carjacking, assault and evading police, authorities said.
