One person was killed and three others were hurt overnight when a driver plowed into a crowd on purpose in Riverside, according to police.

Officers received numerous calls at 12:39 a.m. Sunday of a fight in the street near the intersection of Franklin Avenue and 5th Street, the Riverside Police Department said. During the unrest, a driver struck multiple people.

One person died at the scene. Two people who were critically hurt were taken to Riverside Community Hospital and a fourth victim was also taken to an undisclosed hospital. The severity of the injuries of the fourth person was not clear.

As the investigation unfolded, detectives learned the driver allegedly drove into a crowd intentionally.  Officers identified that person and detained them, as well as recovered the vehicle involved.

Law enforcement did not release the name of the deceased or of the driver.

The investigation is ongoing.
