Former San Jose Sharks forward Mikael Granlund is returning to the SAP Center for the second time since he was traded.
Granlund, who revitalized his career in San Jose, signed a three-year $21 million contract with the Anaheim Ducks on July 1st. Rumors suggested the Sharks and Granlund might be interested in a return to Teal, but it never materialized.
“I think this coming to Anaheim happened very quickly for me,” Granlund exclusively told SHD. “There were a lot of things to consider, and this really felt like the best option for me.”
San Jose Sharks forward William Eklund played with Granlund for the majority of the two seasons he was in Teal. Fabian Zetterlund also flanked Granlund, creating the ‘Lund’ line.

Eklund was deeply affected by Zetterlund’s trade, as his best friend on the team was traded. Granlund discussed what Eklund might’ve gone through during the trade season.
“We’re all human, so it all adds up,” Granlund said. “At the same time, the things you can really focus on are just going out there and playing hockey. Trying to work hard every single day, trying to get better. When it’s game time, just go out there and play. Do your best. That’s really the only thing you can focus on.”
Granlund said he had a good summer with his transition to Anaheim. He was thankful for his time with the Sharks.
“It was good. Obviously, playing some good hockey for the last two seasons,” Granlund said. “It was a good regular summer, and just trying to get ready for this season.”

Granlund on the Olympics & facing Celebrini, Smith
Granlund fully admitted that the Olympics are on his mind. As a long-time NHL veteran, Granlund has participated in the Winter Olympics before. He played for Finland during the 2014 Olympic Games, scoring three goals and four assists in six games.
“Yeah, honestly, it is [on my mind]. It’s been 11 years since I played at the Olympics. It was such a great experience. Every single time I get the chance to put the Finnish jersey on, it’s such an honor. I’ve always loved it from the bottom of my heart,” Granlund said. “I’m really excited about that tournament. Obviously, it’s far away. You don’t really think about it daily, but at the same time, it’s coming up. It’s going to be one of the highlights of the season.”
Granlund will likely match up against Macklin Celebrini and Will Smith during Saturday’s game. After a full summer of development, the former San Jose Sharks forward knows the two young stars will be better.
“I’m excited to see those guys. They’re young. They’re gonna only get better every single year,” Granlund said. “There’s a lot of talent there.”
