BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) Under clear skies along the River Walk, locals from across Kern County gathered at the Field of Honor on Memorial Day to pay tribute to those who died while serving the country.

The 12th annual Thousand Flags event, hosted by the Bakersfield Breakfast Rotary Club, featured rows of flags and placards recognizing service members.

Bakersfield resident Ande Moreland said the placards allow families to honor loved ones who have died, as well as recognize those who are still living.

“So, each of the placards, like for my father-in-law, is in memory of them, and you can also get ones to celebrate one of those still alive as well,” Moreland said.

A separate Memorial Day ceremony was held Monday morning at Union Cemetery, featuring color guard presentations, music and speeches from local leaders.

Taps were also played as part of the observance.

For many, the day served as both a solemn remembrance and a reminder of the cost of the freedoms Americans enjoy.

Sandra Gonzales, a member of the Sons of American Revolution, said Memorial Day is important because of what service members fought for.

“Our freedom. I mean that’s what we fought for. We’re still fighting for it. It doesn’t stop. You have to keep continuing. Because if it stops, where are we?” Gonzales said.

Sophia Kaufman of the Children of the American Revolution said the day carries personal meaning for her family.

“I think it’s definitely an amazing day to celebrate those who have served. And my brother is currently in the army. I have grandparents who have served. So, it really means a lot. Even though we celebrate every year it’s something that’s good to remind our country of,” Kaufman said.
