When İnci Gürün released her first viral hit, “Gaslight,” she was well on her way to a corporate finance career. Now, she’s one of the industry’s most promising rising hyperpop arists.
The Turkish-born, New York-based dance musician, known professionally as Inji, first exploded on social media in 2022 with “Gaslight,” which she produced in a dorm room with Alex Graf, her classmate at the University of Pennsylvania. Surpassing 300,000 Spotify streams in less than two weeks, Inji’s viral success prompted her to create and release her debut EP, “LFG,” in the summer of 2023, and embrace music as her profession.
Her party tunes are influenced by the storytelling of jazz and blues artists such as Amy Winehouse and infused with a chaotic, carefree energy. In October, she released her debut mixtape, “Superlame,” which was praised by critics for its blend of house, techno and dubstep elements.
Inji performed at last year’s Outside Lands at Golden Gate Park in San Francisco and plans to return to the city for a performance at the Castro Theatre on Friday, May 29.
