Dashcam footage released by TMZ captures the pop icon’s bizarre exchanges with police as addiction specialists urge compassion over mockery

Newly released dashcam footage obtained by TMZ is reigniting concern over Britney Spears, after the singer’s March DUI arrest near the Los Angeles-Ventura County border. Addiction experts warn that the public may be focusing on the wrong parts of the viral video.

The footage shows California Highway Patrol officers pulling over Spears after another driver reportedly called 911 to report a vehicle speeding and swerving across lanes on the 101 Freeway. Officers told the 44-year-old pop icon they observed her weaving between lanes before smelling alcohol coming from the car. Internet sleuths previously took issue with Spears’ arrest, hinting that things didn’t exactly add up based on how long the reported 911 call followed Spears’ car.

At one point during the stop, Spears nervously tried charming the officers, offering to cook for them at her home. “You can come to my house… I’ll make you food or lasagna or whatever you want,” Spears said in the footage. “I have a pool.”

The Grammy winner also allegedly insisted she was capable of driving home even after officers informed her she could not get back behind the wheel.

Police later discovered an empty wine glass and an unprescribed bottle of Adderall inside the vehicle, according to reports. Spears (who was alone in the car) was ultimately arrested on suspicion of DUI.

In May, Spears pleaded guilty through attorney Michael A. Goldstein to violating California’s “wet reckless” law, a plea often used in first-time DUI cases involving lower blood alcohol levels and no injuries or crashes. She was sentenced to 12 months’ probation, ordered to complete DUI education courses and pay fines. The arrest came just weeks after Spears voluntarily checked herself into a treatment facility.

But while social media users quickly turned clips of Spears’ unusual comments and demeanor into memes, addiction specialist Richard Taite says the public reaction may be missing the deeper issue entirely.

“Everyone is laughing about the accent and the odd comments, but those are the parts of addiction and mental health struggles people often miss,” Taite, founder and executive chairman of Carrara Treatment Wellness & Spa, told media outlets. “We turn warning signs into memes. Sometimes behavior that looks bizarre or funny can actually be someone struggling and needing help.”

Taite, whose luxury Malibu treatment center has worked with high-profile clients, said denial is often central to addiction.

“One of the biggest myths is that if someone says they’re fine, they’re fine,” he said. “Addiction is a disease built on minimizing, rationalizing, and believing you still have control.”

For Spears, the footage has reopened conversations surrounding her fame, media and press trauma and the intense scrutiny she has faced for decades.

The singer became the face of the #FreeBritney movement before a judge dissolved her controversial conservatorship in 2021, ending more than 13 years of legal control over her personal and financial decisions. Spears later detailed the emotional toll of the arrangement in her bestselling memoir, The Woman in Me.

“Fame doesn’t protect people from addiction, trauma, or emotional pain,” Taite added. “If anything, it can create an environment where people become very good at performing that they’re okay long before they actually are.”

Spears remains one of pop music’s biggest stars, known for hits including …Baby One More Time, Oops!… I Did It Again and Toxic.
