Sacramento Zoo released revised expansion drawings for Land Park that preserve the historic Swanston fountain and statue after community concerns.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Sacramento Zoological Society released revised concept drawings Tuesday for its proposed expansion in Sacramento’s Land Park after community concerns over a historic memorial site.

The updated proposal removes the Charles Swanston memorial fountain and statue from the zoo’s planned northern expansion area. The change comes after residents raised concerns about preserving the landmark’s historical significance.

Earlier this month, the Sacramento City Council approved a non-binding memorandum of understanding to explore expanding the zoo using two nearby parcels, including a vacant 4.4-acre lot across Land Park Drive and a 1.4-acre parcel bordering the zoo.

“The Sacramento Zoo has been a part of the fabric of this community for nearly 100 years,” Zoological Society Board President Elizabeth Stallard said in a statement. “We are committed to being thoughtful community partners.”

The revised concept drawings have already been submitted to the city as discussions over the zoo’s future in Land Park continue.
