SAN FRANCISCO (WCSC) — The Golden Gate Bridge, a towering two-mile structure spanning across the San Francisco Bay, opened with a rush of pedestrians on this day 89 years ago.
The structure cost $35 million to complete and was hailed as one of the true architectural achievements of the 20th century.
More than 100,000 people joined in the festivities and had crossed the bridge by midafternoon.
Initially, 25,000 people rushed the five-cent tollbooths at the bridge’s opening at 6 a.m.
The bridge’s 4,200-foot single suspension length was the longest in the world when it opened and it was designed to withstand the rough and quick-changing weather conditions of the area.
