More details were revealed Wednesday morning about the schedule and medal competitions when the Paralympics come to Los Angeles for the first time in 2028.
LA28 unveiled the Paralympics competition schedule by event, providing a look at when medal events are scheduled during the 14 days of competition. The schedule also includes more details about sports and venues. The schedule was previously available by day and session.
“The Paralympic Games are a must-see elite sporting event,” said Janet Evans, LA28 chief athlete officer. “As the world’s third largest sporting event, they celebrate athletic excellence at the highest level, demonstrating relentless determination and the limitless potential and power of sport. With more sports and days of competition than ever before, LA28 is setting the stage for a legendary Paralympic Games.”
Here’s what to know.
2028 Paralympics sports on debut
Para climbing, which included eight new events, will make its debut in 2028. Competition is set for Days 9–12, from Aug. 24-27, 20028. Eighty athletes — 40 men and 40 women — will compete in four medal events per gender with 10 athletes in each final.
Para table tennis, para triathlon and para swimming will have new events in Los Angeles.
Before the Opening Ceremony
For the first time in Paralympics history, the competition will begin for the Opening Ceremony. The action starts Aug. 13, 2028 with wheelchair rugby and boccia on Aug. 14, 2028 before the Opening Ceremony on Aug. 15, 2028.
Final weekend medal rush
Aug. 25-27 2028 will see champions awarded more than 50 gold medals in para archery, para badminton, para canoe, para climbing, para cycling road, para judo, para powerlifting, para swimming, para table tennis, sitting volleyball, wheelchair basketball and wheelchair tennis.
2028 Paralympics venues
The 2028 Paralympics feature 560 medal events, the most since Seoul 1988, and a record 23 sports held in nearly 20 competition venues. There are seven competition zones in Southern California with all venues located within a 35-mile radius.
The Los Angeles Convention Center will be busy with boccia, para judo, para table tennis, para taekwondo and wheelchair fencing. The Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum will be the stage for para athletics and the Closing Ceremony with its neighbor the Galen Center hosting para badminton and wheelchair rugby.
