Fresno City Attorney Andrew Janz is requesting a left-wing political party come into compliance with campaign finance laws.
Janz sent a letter to the California Working Families Party warning that the organization will be fined if it does not file the required campaign finance forms with the city.
Driving the news: The California Working Families Party sent out mailers advocating for Fresno Building Healthy Communities CEO Sandra Celedon in her Assembly District 31 race, along with several other candidates, including Ariana Martinez Lott for Fresno City Council District 7.
The far-left organization also was one of several groups hosting a phone bank in support of Celedon and Martinez Lott.
California campaign finance law requires all outside spending supporting candidates that totals more than $1,000 to be filed with Form 496. The California Working Families Party filed that form, but it did not disclose how much it spent on the mailers.
A person by the name of Marni Jacobs filed a complaint with Janz’s office alleging that the California Working Families Party was in violation of state campaign finance laws for not disclosing the mailer spending.
The big picture: Janz told the progressive group on Tuesday that it has 48 hours to report its spending or face a $1,000 fine.
The party told GV Wire that it sent the required forms to the state on May 21.
The outlet also reported that the phone bank issue is outside of Janz’s jurisdiction.
Zoom in: The California Working Families Party filed form 496 on May 8, which was received by the City Clerk’s Office on May 26, stating that it spent $507.83 on mailers supporting Martinez Lott, among other expenses.
It filed another Form 496 on May 15, which was also received on May 26, detailing expenses in support of City Council candidate Naindeep Singh, who is running in District 1.
What they’re saying: “My team has followed all reporting rules pertaining to coordination,” Martinez Lott told GV Wire. “I am proud of the way we have operated this community-driven campaign. Over 400 people have donated their time and resources – teachers, community leaders, District 7 neighbors, nurses, and my family and friends.”
