La Jolla’s Marine Protected Area — including La Jolla Cove and Children’s Pool — has become a case study in failed wildlife management and chronic ecological neglect.
At La Jolla Cove, sea lion pup mortality has been documented at approximately 78%, compared to just 10–20% at a nearby protected rookery. Despite this alarming disparity, harassment, crowding, and disturbance continue daily. The Cove’s recent designation as TripAdvisor’s “#1 beach” will only intensify an already unsustainable situation; last July 4 reportedly brought 500,000 visitors to the area.
At Children’s Pool, newly born harbor seal pups are suddenly overwhelmed by crowds once the seasonal closure ends, resulting in repeated Marine Mammal Protection Act violations. Fishing entanglements from fishing on the sea wall, illegal wildlife and shell take, tidepool trampling near Black’s Beach, low-flying aircraft disturbance, toxic runoff and trash continue throughout the Marine Protected Area with minimal oversight.
A Marine Protected Area should not exist in name only. Protected habitat deserves actual protection.
