A driver accused of killing a 6-year-old boy who was on a bike ride with his family in Pacific Beach last January will go to trial.

Tiffany Sanchez, 32, pleaded not guilty to felony charges, including gross vehicular manslaughter and hit and run causing death.

The parents of Hudson O’Loughlin’s testimony in court on Wednesday was gut-wrenching and emotional, and had many in the courtroom in tears.

Prosecutors said Sanchez turned into an alleyway near Ingraham Street and Pacific Beach Drive, striking Hudson on his bike just feet behind his dad.

The truly agonizing part of the testimony was when Matt O’Loughlin described how his son was still alive and tried to move his bike out of the way when Sanchez allegedly accelerated and ran over Hudson with her jeep.

The 911 call was played in the courtroom as Juliana O’Loughlin was on the stand. She explained how she chased Sanchez’s car down the alley, hoping to catch the license plate.

Another bystander did, which helped locate Sanchez at her home in National City.

The prosecution also pointed to a timeline demonstrating that Sanchez was aware of what she had done, even looking up a news article on her mobile phone and Facebook app, about the accident within hours of it happening.

One detective described how Sanchez ran from him when he confronted her outside of her car.

One witness who lived close by and was about to leave the alleyway with a friend to go hiking, heard the commotion and ran over. She described what she saw when they exited their vehicle at the other end of the alley.

“We saw it stop and then immediately, the jeep driver slammed the gas to accelerate rapidly,” the witness said. When the prosecutor asked if she saw an upward motion, she responded, “Yes, it looked like it had bounced over something.”

After the preliminary concluded for the day, NBC 7 spoke with Deputy District Attorney Cassidy McWilliams.

“I commend them for the strength of what they’re going through and the fact that they were able to show up today and relive this awful experience in front of an entire courtroom full of people.”

If convicted of the charges, Sanchez could face up to 12 years in state prison. She is out on bond, wearing a GPS ankle monitor, and is due back in court on July 27th.

Trial is expected in September.
