Plan to replace Club Bahia with 237 apartments

Echo Park—Club Bahia, an anchor of the Latin music dance scene for more than half a century, may be torn down and replaced with apartments. A request has been filed with the city to demolish the nightclub building at 1130 W. Sunset Blvd. At the same time, a seven-story mixed-use building with 237 apartments is planned for 1120 W. Councilmember Ysabel Jurado is calling for nuisance abatement proceedings at 5100, 5106, and 5110 Huntington Dr., where she says a developer allowed vacant buildings to become unsecured and then conducted unpermitted demolition. Jurado’s proposal would use $104,000 from a city repair and demolition fund for abatement, with the city seeking repayment from the property owner. Motion

A home on at 124 E. Ave. 33 is being recommended to become a Historic-Cultural Monument. The Cultural Heritage Commission gave its approval last week to the Bilderrain Residence at 124 East Avenue 33, and the recommendation now moves to the City Council for approval. It was nominated as a rare example of a single-family residence designed in the Mission Revival architectural style. But it also had an indirect connection to L.A.’s Anti-Chinese Massacre of 1871.
