BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — Severe weather forced the cancellation of the Wasco Junior high schools graduation ceremony Wednesday evening after rain moved into the area just as the event was starting.
According to the Wasco Union Elementary School District, the ceremony was scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. at the Wasco High School football field.
The rain started coming down just a minute before.
The procession was held for graduates to take their seats. However, the rain intensified. Officials said thunder could be heard. It was decided to cancel the ceremony due to safety concerns.
Videos from an attendee showed families yelling and supporting their students despite the rain. Video also showed people walking out with drenched clothes.
