SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — A 68-year-old man was arrested in connection to a homicide in San Francisco’s Outer Sunset District earlier this month. The San Francisco Police Department responded at 5:21 a.m. on May 17 to the 2500 block of 46th Avenue on a report of a shooting.

At the scene, officers found a victim suffering from gunshot wound injuries and rendered aid. Paramedics arrived, but despite life-saving measures, the victim died at the scene.

The SFPD Homicide Detail responded and took over the investigation. Philippe Chagniot, a 68-year-old San Francisco resident, was identified as the suspect in the case.

Police developed probable cause to arrest him.

On Wednesday, SFPD investigators located Chagniot and arrested him without incident. SFPD Homicide Detail investigators later executed a search warrant at his residence and seized evidence related to the incident.

The victim in the case was identified by the Office of the San Francisco Medical Examiner as Eric Paul Bigone, a 58-year-old San Francisco resident.

Chagniot was taken to San Francisco County Jail and booked for murder, police said. While an arrest has been made, SFPD said the investigation remains open and active.

According to the San Francisco District Attorney’s Office, he’s been charged with murder with an allegation that he used a firearm in the commission of the murder and a special circumstance allegation of lying in wait. He’s also charged with assault with an automatic firearm, arson, possession of an automatic firearm, possession of a silencer, and possession of a high-capacity magazine.

Court documents cited by the DA indicate that Chagniot, disguised in dark clothing and a mask, approached Bigone’s residence on a bicycle on the morning of the shooting. Surveillance footage recovered by SFPD allegedly showed Chagniot spray-painting surveillance cameras before lighting a fire on top of a car in front of Bigone’s home.

Chagniot then allegedly hid. When the victim emerged with a shovel to remove the burning materials from the car, Chagniot allegedly shot him in the back with a silenced, fully automatic Mac-10 weapon.

Once the victim fell to the ground, Chagniot allegedly stood over him and fired again, killing him. Surveillance camera allegedly shows Chagniot casually biking away after fatally shooting Bigone.

Chagniot, according to officials, was Bigone’s landlord.
