A fire damaged a Riverside apartment complex Friday and sent thick smoke over a neighborhood near the UC Riverside campus.

The fire was reported late Friday morning in the 3900 block of Iowa Avenue. Flames appeared to have damaged the upper floor of the two-story building.

There were no immediate reports of injuries. Details about a cause of the fire were not available.

Thick smoke could be see blocks away.

The UC Riverside Police Department said it is monitoring the fire and asked people to avoid the area due to traffic control for the fire response. The university does not own the housing, but student live in the area.
