At their June 2 meeting, in less than a week, the Coronado City Council will establish priorities for the City’s Capital Improvement Program for the next several years. The council’s subcommittee is recommending that the Winn Room remodel be pushed to the very bottom of the priority list, as something that should not be considered for many years in the far distant future, and possibly not to move forward at all. I urge you to contact the Mayor and City Council Members and ask them to make renovating the Winn Room a top-tier priority for the city.
In 2005, at the time of the library expansion, the remodel of the Winn Room was saved for “another day”. After a delay of more than two decades, and after much public debate and extensive studies, the decision was finally made two years ago to move forward with renovating and modernizing this outdated and heavily used space. Yet despite broad community support, the project now risks losing momentum again, in place of every other conceivable project from golf course driving range beautification to undergrounding cables in various alleys, an emergency generator for the Spreckels Center not likely to ever be used, and over 40 other projects that are being proposed before work starts on the Winn Room.
The Winn Room is one of Coronado’s most important community gathering spaces, welcoming thousands of visitors each year to hundreds of events. For decades, it has served as a hub for educational programs, cultural events, lectures, performances, civic discussions, nonprofit meetings, and library programming that benefit residents and visitors of all ages. The Winn Room benefits more community members in more ways than almost any other city facility. The Winn Room is vital to Coronado’s civic and cultural life, and now is the time to ensure this long-awaited investment moves forward.
The City’s Capital Improvement Program prioritizes projects that support essential services and long-term community enhancement. The Winn Room renovation clearly meets that standard. Upgrading this heavily used 1973 facility will improve acoustics, audiovisual capabilities, accessibility, and seating capacity to better serve Coronado for decades to come.
Now is the time for community voices to be heard.

And please attend the June 2nd City Council meeting and express your support to prioritize the Winn Room renovation in person.
