A recycling truck driver hit a woman walking in San Francisco’s Tenderloin neighborhood Friday morning, sending her to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, police said.
Police responded to the 400 block of Jones Street near Ellis Street at around 8:47 a.m., said Officer Eve Laokwansathitaya, a San Francisco Police Department spokesperson.
The woman was transported to the hospital, Laokwansathitaya said. No update on her condition was immediately available Friday evening.
The driver stayed on scene and is cooperating with the investigation, which is being led by the department’s Traffic Collision Investigations Unit, Laokwansathitaya said.
Alcohol or drugs were not believed to be a factor in the crash.
The truck belonged to Recology, the company contracted to handle San Francisco’s recycling, according to Recology spokesman Robert Reed. He said that the accident occurred while the driver was making rounds through the Tenderloin.
“Safety is our top priority at Recology, and we are working with the proper authorities to determine exactly what happened,” Reed said in a statement.
