Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart is beloved as an iconoclastic visionary, a composer who was committed to employing fresh and convention-testing thinking to how music was written, produced, and savored.

So it is no wonder that a wondrous production of Mozart’s “The Magic Flute” honors the impresario’s convention-breaking traditions centuries after he created the extraordinary work.

The singular show returns to the LA Opera May 30, with a final date set for June 21.

The playful production, an otherworldly epic featuring incredible opera performers, animated projections, and practical surprises that lead to frequent ripples of appreciative applause, first debuted in Los Angeles in 2013, with popular revivals in 2016 and 2019.

When “The Magic Flute” arrived in Southern California, audiences were treated to “the first performances outside Berlin.” The show was originally staged at Komiche Oper Berlin in 2012.

Stage director Barrie Kosky and the theater group 1927 created “the revolutionary staging” for this production, a fanciful realization that “… is unlike anything encountered before on the operatic stage,” said the LA Opera team.

Conductor James Conlon is in “his 20th and final season as the company’s Music Director — his last opera in that role before becoming Conductor Laureate,” a fact that is adding further emotion to the emotive production.
