CLOVIS — Early last year, Jasir Fontenot was asked about his long-range goals.

“I want to become the first four-time state 110-meter hurdle champion,” said the then-San Diego High School freshman before he went on a roll en route to winning his first state title in 13.31 before transferring to Mater Dei Catholic.

The final game of Mater Dei’s basketball season, Fontenot turned an ankle. Badly. The track and field season threatened to fly by without him until six weeks ago, when he finally ran without pain.

Slowly, Fontenot lowered his time until heading into the CIF State Track and Field Championships on Saturday at Veterans Stadium in Clovis, he was back as the state’s No. 1 hurdler.

He showed that same speed from last year as he captured his second straight title, this time in 13.33 seconds with an aiding wind of 3.5 meters per second.

“I could feel the wind and it pushed me into the hurdles,” the sophomore said. “I actually hit the first hurdle pretty hard, but after the fifth hurdle, I went to work.

“I held myself back to attack the last five hurdles. That time (13.33) is No. 3 in the nation.”

He opened a gap at that point, and when former state leader Lennox Newton of Long Beach Poly smashed a hurdle and fell, Fontenot was able to win handily over San Jose Harker’s Brady Tse, who ran 13.46.

You could almost feel the sense of relief from Fontenot.

“I believe this one will end up being the hardest because of all my problems,” said Fontenot. “I’m still not 100% healthy — maybe 95%. I just had to focus and execute.”

Which he says will make him less tired as he now runs meets like the Nike Nationals, the U-20 meet and the USA National Championships.

Also, La Jolla’s Chiara Dailey was hoping for her first state track title after winning three cross country crowns, but Corona Santiago’s Braelyn Combe had other plans.

Combe went right to the lead and every time Dailey challenged her, she held off the Viking, with Combe winning the 1,600 in 4:35.59 to Dailey’s 4:38.82.

Although Dailey’s time is a section record, bettering her own 4:39.31, she was still disappointed after finishing third the last two years.

Five San Diego section athletes grabbed third-place medals.

Helix freshman Ava Parker was third in the 400 at 53.47; Steele Canyon’s girls placed third in the 400 relay at 46.10; Del Norte’s Caitlin Khieu went 12 feet, 6 inches in the pole vault; and Grossmont’s Gabrielle Thomas was third in the 100 hurdles with a wind-aided time of 13.72. The surprise of the day was Patrick Henry’s Kymani Joseph, who hit exactly 24 feet (wind legal) in the long jump.
