Police are investigating a homicide in an apartment building on California Street, they announced Saturday afternoon. It is the first homicide Berkeley has seen in more than a year.
A property manager at a building in the 1900 block of California Street contacted police around noon after finding a dead woman inside one of the units there, police said in a statement around 4:40 p.m.
The victim, who was in her 30s, lived in the unit where she was found, police said. Other details were not provided, and the department did not immediately respond to a request for more information Saturday afternoon.
“The investigation is still in its preliminary stages, and detectives are in the process of taking over the case from patrol officers,” the statement read. Police asked anyone with information to contact their Homicide Unit at 510-981-5741.
