La Jolla’s Chiara Dailey wins first state track title to cap high school career
La Jolla High School senior Chiara Dailey, after finishing second in the 1,600-meter run, won the 3,200 in 10:01.91 on May 30 in Clovis to capture her first state track title to go with three cross country crowns.
Corona Santiago’s Braelyn Combe held off Dailey in the 1,600, winning in 4:35.59 to Dailey’s 4:38.82. Dailey’s time bettered her own CIF San Diego Section record of 4:39.31.
But an hour later, Dailey took the lead in the 3,200 with 400 meters remaining, withstood a challenge by Palo Alto’s Amaya Bharadway in the final 100 meters and then pulled away in the final 50.
Dailey is now bound for Stanford University.
La Jolla High loses Division V softball championship game
Third-seeded Monte Vista scored in every inning but the seventh en route to a 17-9 win over No. 1 La Jolla High to claim the CIF San Diego Section Division V softball championship May 30 at UC San Diego.
The Vikings, who also lost last year’s Division V title game, fell despite the efforts of Ella Pearl, who went into the game hitting .554 and went 3-for-4, coming within a home run of the cycle, and Jacey Taylor, who drove in her section-leading 71st run.
