The storied tale of taillights and steering wheels and dashboards and engines, the tale that involves equally storied corner of Fairfax Avenue and Third Street, stretches back over the decades, like a highway spooling across a vast desert.
Once upon a revved-up time the corner where the Original Farmers Market now grandly stands was synonymous with the Gilmore Oil Company, and the vroom-vroom racing scene at Gilmore Stadium, and an ongoing celebration of the auto.
That celebration continues each June when the famous public market welcomes dozens of beautifully maintained vintage cars for a free-to-all festivity: It’s the Gilmore Heritage Auto Show, a no-ticket-needed chance to stroll among some sensational dream machines.
The one-day-only event is marking 30 years in 2026, so make time to join the milestone party June 6.
Route 66 is the colorful inspiration behind this year’s theme, with “America’s Main Street” serving as the festive focus.
“Nearly 80 breathtaking American classics will be on display throughout the Market — everything from customs, hot rods, trucks and more!” promises the landmark’s team.
Do you own the sort of eye-catching roll that might have rolled along Route 66 a half century or so ago? The event is open to “… (a)ll American cars manufactured before 2000,” is the word.
