A 47-year-old Detroiter is facing felony charges in Oakland County for allegedly battering and strangling a woman described as his “on-again, off-again girlfriend” — while threatening to kill her, officials said.
Ricky Kahil McLaurin is charged with assault with intent to murder and domestic violence, third offense. According to the Oakland County Prosecutor’s Office, the alleged victim contacted a family member for help, who then called police. McLaurin subsequently turned himself in at the Southfield police station.

“This victim sought help, and that may have saved her life,” Prosecutor Karen McDonald stated in a news release. “Women suffering domestic abuse are not alone. Resources and support are available to help victims escape abusive relationships.”
McLaurin is in the Oakland County Jail, with bond set at $100,000. If he posts bond, monitoring by electronic tether is required. He next court appearance is scheduled for a probable cause conference on June 11.
Assault with intent to murder is punishable by up to life in prison. Domestic violence-third offense, carries a penalty of up to five years in prison and/or a $5,000 fine.
