On Oct. 10, Newsom signed Assembly Bill 1127, which prohibits licensed firearms dealers from selling guns that can be “easily converted by hand or with common household tools” into a machine gun. Although the Glock isn’t specifically mentioned in the legislation, it falls into that category of firearms. The Glock is infamous for its easy-alteration capabilities by using a ‘Glock switch’.

The bill’s author, Jesse Gabriel (D-Encino), said, “Automatic weapons are exceptionally lethal and capable of firing hundreds of rounds per minute. They are illegal in California. Unfortunately, some semi-automatic firearms feature a dangerous design flaw that allows them to be converted to fully automatic weapons through the attachment of a cheap and easy-to-use device, known as a switch.”

He added, “Sadly, certain companies in the gun industry have known about this issue for decades and have done nothing meaningful to address it. This common-sense legislation will ensure that the gun industry is held accountable and that we’re doing everything we possibly can to protect our communities from mass shootings.”

AB 1127 passed through the legislature with a vote of 58-17, garnering support from Democrats and opposition from all Republicans. After being signed into law, it’s expected to go into effect in July 2026. For Glock to continue being sold in California, it would have to undergo a stringent process of modifying its design to comply with the new state law.

The National Rifle Association is fighting back against the new legislation.

“Our message to Governor Newsom is simple,” the NRA said on social media. “We will see you in court.”

John Commerford, the NRA-ILA executive director, said, “Gavin Newsom and his gang of progressive politicians in California are continuing their crusade against constitutional rights. Once again, they are attempting to violate landmark Supreme Court decisions and disarm law-abiding citizens by banning some of the most commonly owned handguns in America.

Commerford added, “This flagrant violation of rights cannot, and will not, go unchecked.”
