BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — The Kern County Library kicked off its 2026 Summer Reading Challenge Monday.

Officials with the library said this year’s theme is “Plant a Seed, Read,” and celebrates growth, curiosity and connection through nature and hands-on learning that is inspired by food, gardening and the natural world.

Readers of all ages can get involved by reading 10 books or reading 10 hours to receive a free book from the “Friends of the Kern County Library.”

The reading challenge runs through July.

You can log your reading by using the “Beanstack” app or stopping by the library once the goal is reached.
