Summer Arts Fest coming to Liberty Station

Summer will get a kick-start with Arts District Liberty Station’s Summer Arts Fest from 2 to 8 p.m. Saturday, June 13.

The free annual festival will transform the North Promenade at Liberty Station into a market showcasing San Diego artists along with live performances from Arts District tenants such as Apt 4 Music, The Rosin Box Project and Young Lions Jazz Conservatory, along with additional acts such as the Lucky Devils Band, High Tide Society and DJ Chris Cutz.

Guests also can partake of food and drinks in the beer and cocktail garden.

Police and fire pickleball and tennis competitions to be in Point Loma

The 59th annual U.S. Police & Fire Championships will return June 13-20 with Olympic-style athletic events throughout San Diego County, including two at Point Loma’s Barnes Tennis Center.

The center, at 4490 W. Point Loma Blvd., will host the pickleball competition on Saturday and Sunday, June 13-14, and the tennis competition Monday through Wednesday, June 15-17.

The Police & Fire Championships will bring together thousands of first responders from across the country for competitions in more than 40 sports, also including baseball, track and field, archery, water polo, billiards, Brazilian jiu-jitsu, dodgeball and new additions including Hyrox.

Summer Reading Program offers books, activities, events and prizes

The San Diego Public Library system’s Summer Reading Program is underway through Saturday, Aug. 15, offering youngsters a chance to win prizes for their reading, including free books and food, passes to Balboa Park museums and a chance to win a pair of tickets to a San Diego Padres game in September.

The program also includes a list of activities participants can complete, such as visiting a community garden or a farmers market, planting seeds and more.

Prizes can be earned by completing any combination of 10 books read, hours spent reading or activities completed.

The Summer Reading Program is made up of three age categories: 5 and younger, 6-11 and teenagers and adults. All participants 17 and younger who register by Tuesday, June 30, will receive a free general admission ticket to the 2026 San Diego County Fair, valid Fridays through Sundays from June 12 to July 5.

Last year, about 35,000 Summer Reading Program participants collectively read more than 5 million books and logged 6.7 million minutes of reading, according to the San Diego Public Library.
