Kaiser Permanente has filed proposed plans for its new hospital in San Francisco’s Anza Vista neighborhood. Upon completion in 2033, it will be Kaiser’s first new hospital in the city in more than 70 years.
The plans call for converting Kaiser’s current hospital, Kaiser San Francisco Medical Center at 2425 Geary Blvd., into medical office buildings and constructing a new hospital to replace it across the street, at Geary and Divisadero Street. The address for the site of the new hospital is 2190 O’Farrell St.
Kaiser submitted proposed plans to the city’s planning department in late May.
The new hospital would be significantly larger and taller than the existing hospital, which opened in 1954 — 14 floors (266 feet) compared to nine floors, about 300 patient beds compared to 239, and 623,000 square feet compared to 367,000. It would also include an expanded emergency department and a new 12-story parking garage with 1,003 vehicle spaces and 63 bike spaces.
The proposed plan also includes a third-floor sky lounge overlooking Divisadero Street and an outdoor healing garden.
The architect for the project is Perkins & Will.
The project is about a block from the Beideman and O’Farrell Mini Park and two blocks from the Hamilton Playground and Raymond Kimball Playground. A shadow analysis has been prepared, per a city ordinance that mandates additional review of new buildings above 40 feet that could cast shadows on properties under Recreation and Park jurisdiction.
The current hospital on Geary would remain open and fully operational during construction of the new one. Kaiser has said it plans to obtain approvals and conduct public hearings in the first half of 2028 and begin construction in the second half of 2028.
Kaiser on Tuesday said it plans to host additional community forums to engage with neighbors, community organizations, labor and businesses “to ensure this proposal reflects the needs, values and priorities of the people we serve.”
