BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — Several candidates in the 2026 Primary Election have released a statement regarding the hours-long hostage situation at the Chase Bank in downtown Bakersfield.

U.S. House 22nd District Candidate Jasmeet Bains statement said:
I am in active communication with local law enforcement. Members of the public should continue to avoid downtown Bakersfield at this time. My thoughts are with all of the families impacted by this concerning situation.I remain thankful to the emergency personnel who risk their own wellbeing for the safety of our community. First responders run toward danger to keep our community safe. Thank you to these brave men and women. Out of an abundance of caution, and to avoid creating a large gathering of people in close proximity to this incident, we will no longer hold an in-person event in downtown.
CA State Senate 16th District Candidate Melissa Hurtado statement said:
I am aware of the ongoing situation in downtown Bakersfield and am closely monitoring developments.My thoughts are with everyone affected, including local employees, residents, visitors and the first responders working to ensure public safety.I encourage members of the public to avoid the area. 18th and Truxtun Avenue and Chester to H Streets are closed. Please follow all instructions from law enforcement and emergency personnel as they respond to this incident. As this remains an active situation, it is important that information come from official public safety resources.I am grateful to the Bakersfield Police Department, Kern County Sheriff’s Office, Bakersfield Fire Department, and all responding agencies for their swift and coordinated efforts. We will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as more information becomes available.
CA State Senate 16th District Candidate Manpreet Kaur statement said:
I am closely monitoring the bomb threat and hostage situation. Please stay away from Downtown Bakersfield.
CA State Assembly 35th District Candidate Andrae Gonzales posted the release from Bakersfield police with the caption, “Please stay safe, everyone.”
Not a candidate in this year’s race, but current State Senate Shannon Grove of 12th District said in a statement:
I am closely monitoring the developing situation at the Chase Bank building in Bakersfield and appreciate the swift response by our local and federal law enforcement, first responders, and negotiators who are working to resolve it safely.I urge everyone to avoid the downtown area and follow all instructions from authorities to ensure public safety.Please join me in praying for the safe release of the hostages, the well-being of all those involved, and a peaceful resolution to this situation. Our community is strong, and we stand united during this difficult time.Races in this year’s primary election include California’s governor, lieutenant governor, attorney general, secretary of state, and more.
For Kern County, there are also local races and measures.
After the polls close at 8 p.m., the counting of ballots will begin shortly thereafter.
