June 2026: ABC10’s Teacher of the Month is Helen Rasmussen

How a Filipino American Professor Is Empowering California Students

Rasmussen has been teaching for 11 years. Her nominator says, “She is an outstanding teacher who is fully engaged in developing her students both academically and socially. She is engaged and engaging during all lessons; watching, listening, assessing, and readjusting as needed to meet her students’ needs (which can be very challenging when working with emerging adolescents). Her teaching environment is positive and supportive, as well as fun.”

Rasmussen’s advice to parents is: “Stay connected with your child and teachers through communication and showing up to events. My parents were unable to communicate in English with my teachers growing up, but they showed up anyway and were always present in reminding me their expectations for school.”

As part of being recognized as Teacher of the Month, Mrs. Rasmussen will receive $1,000 from SchoolsFirst Federal Credit Union and will be eligible for the title of Teacher of the Year – that includes a $5,000 prize – which will be announced June 2027.
