The East Bay SPCA is waiving adoption fees for all pets this Saturday in celebration of California Adopt-a-Pet Day! Now is the perfect time to meet your new best friend. Adoptable pets are spayed or neutered, microchipped and up to date on vaccinations and flea/parasite preventative.

Dog adopters will receive a discount on dog training services from East Bay SPCA, and free donated supplies, toys and more (subject to availability) will also be available to adopters.

This special event will take place Saturday at the East Bay SPCA adoption locations in Oakland at 8323 Baldwin Street and in Dublin at 4651 Gleason Drive. For one day only, shelters across California will offer fee-waived adoptions. East Bay SPCA is proud and excited to participate in this annual event to find homes for animals. Montclair Beer, Wine & Music Festival to return June 20

The Montclair Beer, Wine & Music Festival will return to Montclair Village from noon to 6 p.m. June 20, bringing together the best of local craft beverages, live entertainment and community spirit for a lively summer celebration.

Presented by the Montclair Village Association (MVA), this popular street festival will feature more than 50 craft beverage tastings, including beer, wine, cider and alcohol-free options alongside delicious offerings from local chefs and artisan vendors.

The festival’s signature Unlimited Tasting Package provides attendees with access to all beverage tastings and includes a commemorative festival glass. Advance tickets are priced at $58, with day-of pricing at $68. Attendees can receive a $20 discount by joining the Montclair Cares Club, a $120 annual membership that supports community programs and events throughout the year.

In addition to tastings, the festival offers free musical performances by local favorites Prospect, Cardboard People, Bululú, DJ BlackWoman and DJ2 hosted by Candi Martinez throughout the day on the Mister Beever’s Paws & Claws Stage powered by Meet Your Core Pilates.

Bring the whole family for free performances, children’ s crafts, lawn games and other engaging activities. Festivalgoers will also have the opportunity to explore Montclair Village’s unique boutique businesses and dining establishments, as well as browse a curated selection of local artisan vendors. Summer hours start Monday at city’s new community pool

Summer schedules at the new Piedmont Community Pool begin next week on Monday, bringing extended weekend hours, expanded programming and more ways to enjoy both pools.

A new addition for summer is afternoon “tube time” at the Competition Pool, featuring clear inner tubes available for swimmers to relax and float. The goal is to make the larger pool more inviting for recreational use while helping ease pressure on the Activity Pool during busy periods. Swimmers must pass a swim test to use tubes in the Competition Pool.

Summer hours from Monday through July 19 are from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays with midday closures from 1 to 2 p.m.; 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Fridays with midday closures from 1 to 2 p.m.;  7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturdays; and 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sundays.

Lap swim will continue to be available in the Competition Pool during all open hours. Starting Monday, the Activity Pool will host swim lessons on weekday evenings and weekend  mornings, meaning open swim in the Activity Pool will no longer be available at all times. Community members planning to use the Activity Pool should confirm the schedule at piedmont.ca.gov/pool before visiting.

The Activity Pool has reached capacity on several days since the pool opened. When the pool is nearing capacity, priority for admission will be given to passholders over drop-ins. Community members can call the pool front desk at 510-420-3090 before visiting to check whether capacity is currently an issue. If you have flexibility in your schedule, consider visiting outside of peak hours, which typically happen in early afternoons.

Fire Department urges community to check, trim vegetation

The Piedmont Fire Department urges community members to check the trees, shrubs and other vegetation on their property behind the sidewalk or street curb and trim anything growing into roadways or hanging over streets.

Keeping vegetation clear helps fire engines, ambulances and other emergency vehicles reach homes quickly. This is especially important on narrow streets and on streets without sidewalks, where landscaping can gradually grow into the travel lane. Property owners are responsible for managing the vegetation on their property, while the city maintains city planted street trees.

The Fire Department requires property owners to maintain at least 3 feet clearance from the edges of roadways and at least 15 feet vertical clearance above the surfaces of roadways. Piedmont firefighters are seeing overgrown vegetation create access issues in many parts of the city. Branches and shrubs that extend into the roadway slow and impede emergency response. 

Property owners may be cited or fined if required clearance is not maintained, but voluntary compliance is the goal. For questions about vegetation clearance requirements, contact the Fire Department at fireinfo@piedmont.ca.gov or 510-420-3030.
