A man was accused of bringing “explosive material” into Sacramento International Airport over the weekend, the Department of Justice said on Tuesday.
The DOJ said on Saturday at around 9 p.m., Kimani Osayande Jones, aka Kimani Osayande Jackson, 49, of Sacramento, tried to go through a TSA checkpoint at the Sacramento International Airport and board a flight while wearing a scarf covering his face and latex gloves on his hands.
Court documents reported Jones had an M-type explosive, a torch lighter, a knife, scissors and scissor blades, an aerosol can and zip ties in his carry-on bag. The DOJ added Jones also had five cellphones, one of them with a 15-minute timer ready to start and another one with a message from an unidentified number on the screen that stated, “I’ll be awaiting your call.”
According to the DOJ, Jones was arrested and the explosive was examined and tested. Authorities determined the device had the potential to cause injury. They also said that “if the explosive had detonated next to a window on a pressurized aircraft flying above 10,000 feet, it had the potential to damage the aircraft and cause a possible loss of cabin pressure.”
If convicted, officials said Jones faces five years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
