As of Wednesday evening, Dr. Flo Cofer is leading the race for Sacramento County District 1, with Sacramento City Council member Eric Guerra trailing closely behind as ballot counting continues. Cofer, who previously ran for Sacramento mayor, said she wants to bring a sense of urgency to the county and noted that residents are most concerned about housing affordability, school safety, job security, and health care. “Everyone I talk to is worried about whether they are safe — in every way imaginable. The county can’t solve everything on its own, but at least it can do a good job at what it is funded to do,” Cofer said in a statement to KCRA. Guerra highlighted mental health and addiction as major issues facing District 1. “The fact that the county got a C might as well be an F. We need to make sure that the county is focused on the mental health and drug addiction issue and working not only with the City of Sacramento, but all the cities in our country,” Guerra said. He also pointed to his experience on the city council as a strength in addressing county-level challenges. “The city-county partnership I led with County Supervisor Rich Desmond got us to clean up and move a lot of those homeless encampments that were 100, 200 people. This is the next county forward — making sure that our county pays attention,” Guerra said. Both candidates acknowledged Supervisor Phil Serna’s 16 years of service to the community. Cofer emphasized that her candidacy is about building on the past while addressing areas that need improvement. “This isn’t about rejecting the past. It’s about building on what works and being honest about what isn’t working well enough,” Cofer said.
