BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — A 39-year-old bicyclist died early Thursday morning after CHP says he stopped in the southbound lane on Weedpatch Highway and was struck by a vehicle.
The California Highway Patrol said on Thursday, June 4, 2026, at around 12:14 a.m., officers were called to Weedpatch Highway, south of Eucalyptus Drive, for a report of a crash between a vehicle and a bicyclist.
CHP said a preliminary investigation found that a 39-year-old man was riding a bicycle within the southbound lane of Weedpatch Highway, south of Eucalyptus Drive. At the same time, a 27-year-old man was driving a 2005 Infiniti sedan southbound on Weedpatch Highway and was approaching the bicyclist.
According to CHP, due to the bicyclist stopping in the southbound lane of Weedpatch Highway and the lighting conditions, the Infiniti continued southbound, and the front of the vehicle collided with the bicycle.
The bicyclist was ejected.
CHP said the driver of the Infiniti remained at the scene and cooperated with the investigation.
The bicyclist died.
CHP said alcohol and/or drugs were not a factor in the collision for the 27-year-old driver of the Infiniti. It is unknown whether alcohol and/or drugs were a factor for the bicyclist, according to CHP.
