Oakland County unveiled its list of top dog names from 2025 registrations. The county tallied 24,248 entries from its Animal Control/Animal Shelter and Pet Adoption Center to compile the list of the county’s most popular dog names, and the two top winners are Bella and Luna.
Maltese owners picked Bella over Luna 9 to 3. Shih Tzu owners went with Bella 18 to 4. But Luna won big with Australian Shepherd owners at 10 to 3, and German Shepherd owners chose Luna 19 to 11.
The top 20 names that appeared at least 100 times from registration included:

In addition to releasing top pet names, Oakland County Animal Shelter and Pet Adoption Center introduced a new licensing program with DocuPet that helps bring lost pets back home. The new system makes dog registration easier through an online platform. Each license lasts 365 days from purchase, and it comes with a DocuPet ID tag and access to HomeSafe, which operates 24/7 to recover lost pets.
Every DocuPet tag carries a unique ID code. This code connects to a secure online pet profile. When someone reports a dog missing, Lost Pet Reports get shared with Petco Love Lost—the nation’s biggest photo-matching lost-and-found database—plus DocuPet’s National Animal Shelter Network.
Bob Gatt, manager of the animal shelter and adoption center, stated, “Dog licensing is not only a legal requirement, it’s also an effective way to protect pets,” he said. “This new partnership makes licensing more convenient for residents while giving pet owners added peace of mind knowing their dog has 24/7 protection if it ever goes missing, according to Oakland County Times.
All dogs in Oakland County are required to be registered and licensed. Residents can visit DocuPet to license and register their pets online.
