The NFL world was set ablaze on Monday when it was reported that the Los Angeles Rams had traded for reigning Defensive Player of the Year Myles Garrett.
Like most who live outside of the greater Los Angeles area, 49ers star left tackle Trent Williams had a blunt way of putting the rival’s addition.
“It sucks,” Williams joked to reporters on Wednesday, saying that he feels the same way as everyone outside of Rams country.
Garrett, 30, led the NFL in sacks last season while breaking the league record with 23 sacks in a single year and currently leads the NFL among active players with 125.5 career sacks.
For the Rams, this isn’t the first time they went “all in,” per se. In 2021, the team traded starting quarterback Jared Goff and three draft picks – including two first-round picks — for Matthew Stafford.
That decision led to the franchise winning its first title in more than two decades as they defeated the Cincinnati Bengals 23-20 in Super Bowl LVI – a title game played at the Rams’ home field, SoFi Stadium.
Fast forward five years and Super Bowl LXI is slated to be played in Inglewood, Calif., at that same stadium come next February.
For the 49ers and 30 other teams, they’re hoping history doesn’t repeat itself.
