LOS ANGELES — The California Bird Atlas is enlisting the public’s help to document breeding birds with an inaugural “Big Weekend” happening right now.
It’s a new statewide effort to document the breeding activity of birds all over California, and they’re relying on citizen scientists all over the state to help them gather specific data about breeding behavior, like building nests or feeding young.
Because birds are so sensitive to environmental changes, studying their behavior can tell us a lot about the health of local ecosystems.
That’s why bird atlases inform policy decisions on land protection, habitat management and climate resilience.
California is one of only a handful of states that have never done such a study on a state level.
