San Franciscans who gritted their teeth through weekend closures on 19th Avenue must now brace for more, Caltrans officials said Friday.
This month the agency will shut down lanes overnight Monday through Friday between Lincoln Way and Holloway Ave. Crews will paint brighter stripes along the three-mile strip of freshly paved road and then make electrical upgrades to finish the project.
The work entails saw-cutting and installing electrical detector loops, which are sensors embedded in the pavement that detect when a car is waiting at a traffic signal. These instruments will be added at Winston Drive, Sloat Boulevard, Vicente Street, Lincoln Way and Quintara Street.
Closures are scheduled to last from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. and could cause some inconvenience for drivers, Caltrans spokespeople acknowledged. They assured, however, that the electrical work will not be too noisy.
Although the 19th Avenue Rehabilitation Project caused some disruption on a busy corridor between Golden Gate Park and San Francisco State University, the effort was critical to maintain the health of a city artery that is also a state highway. In addition to fixing the roadbed workers will improve the traffic detection system, which counts the number of vehicles passing through.
Later this summer Caltrans will repave the intersection of 19th Ave. and California Street in the Richmond district.
