Two people died Monday when a reckless driver crashed into an Oakland police vehicle, according to officials.
The crash happened at about 11 a.m. near East 12th Street and 29th Avenue, according to the Oakland Housing Authority (OHA). The housing authority did not immediately provide specifics on the two fatalities or say if anyone else was injured.
An Oakland Housing Authority Police Department (OHAPD) officer initially spotted a vehicle driving recklessly in the area of East 12th Street, OHA said. The officer tried to pull the driver over, but the driver took off at a high rate of speed.
The officer turned off his emergency lights and siren and did not chase after the driver, a move consistent with OHAPD policy, OHA said.
Shortly thereafter, the driver crashed into an Oakland Police Department (OPD) vehicle, leaving two people dead, OHA said. The driver tried to flee on foot, but they were taken into custody by OHAPD.
An investigation is ongoing.
