Two people were killed and an officer was injured in Oakland on Monday after the driver of an allegedly stolen vehicle collided with an Oakland Police Department patrol vehicle, police said.
On Monday morning, an Oakland Housing Authority officer attempted to make a traffic stop on a vehicle allegedly being driven recklessly in the area of East 12th Street. The vehicle failed to yield to the officer and took off at a high rate of speed; the Housing Authority officer did not pursue the car, the department said.
According to Oakland Police, the vehicle allegedly continued to move through the streets recklessly and struck an uninvolved OPD vehicle that was going north on 29th Avenue at East 12th Street at about 11:15 a.m. The suspect exited the vehicle and tried to run but was arrested by a Housing Authority officer, police said. The department said the vehicle had been stolen.
Two people involved in the collision died at the scene, though the department did not immediately specify who was killed or how it happened.
An Oakland Police Department officer was injured and was taken to the hospital, where he was listed in stable condition.
