Two people died and an Oakland police officer was injured after the driver of a stolen vehicle struck a patrol vehicle in East Oakland on Monday, authorities said.
The crash occurred shortly before 11:15 a.m. Monday near East 12th Street and 29th Avenue, according to the Oakland Police Department.
Police said an Oakland Housing Authority Police Department officer had attempted to stop a vehicle that was being driven recklessly in the area of East 12th Street. The driver instead sped off, but the housing authority officer did not pursue the vehicle, OPD said.
A short time later, the vehicle continued driving recklessly and struck an uninvolved, marked Oakland patrol vehicle going north on 29th Avenue at East 12th Street, authorities said.
The driver got out of the vehicle and tried to flee, but was taken into custody by housing authority police, OPD said. The vehicle was later confirmed to have been stolen.
Two people involved in the crash died at the scene. Authorities have not released their identities pending notification of their families.
An Oakland police officer injured in the crash was taken to a hospital and was last listed in stable condition, police said. The suspect was also taken to a hospital and was last listed in stable condition.
Investigators said it was not yet known whether alcohol or drugs played a role in the crash.
