Friday, June 5

It’s Friday — the late-afternoon sun is hitting your desk, begging you to go outside. And if you’re near downtown, there’s really no excuse to head straight home for a date with your couch. Here’s what to pitch your coworkers once the 4 p.m. slump hits.

4:30 p.m. Drag Me Downtown (opens in new tab) at 101 California Plaza

Pop out early for a serving of fierce drag and local bites during this four-part series of free shows in the heart of FiDi. Bay Area lip-syncing royalty Bobby Friday, Todd Hotty, Nicki Jizz, and Hera Wynn will take your mind off deliverables, but if you need further help unwinding, the frosé and Pride-themed cocktails will be flowing. Even if your evening ends here, it beats watching the clock hit 5 p.m. in the office.

7:30 p.m. Culture Slop magazine launch party (opens in new tab) at 25 Maiden Lane

The people-watching at this gathering organized by Missing Link Club, a “new cultural engine,” and Culture Slop, a magazine that’s somewhere at the intersection of art and tech, is sure to be intriguing. In the off chance the vibe is leaning more AI founder and less underground, sneak off to an associated DJ set and after-party (opens in new tab) at the oh-so-trendy Bar Part Time from 9 p.m. to closing.

9:45 p.m. “Cheaper Than Therapy” (opens in new tab) at Shelton Theater ($25)

Just a short stroll from Maiden Lane sits Shelton Theater, home to “Cheaper Than Therapy” — the No. 2 pick on our comedian-curated list of the best comedy shows in San Francisco. Have a drink, have a laugh, and settle into the weekend.

Saturday, June 6

Forecast: Mostly sunny, high of 66

Saturdays are for taking it slow, forgiving yourself for Friday night’s choices, and getting outside whenever you decide to start your day. The west side is host to a few fun happenings you won’t want to miss.

10 a.m. Coffee and brunch in West Portal

The snaking line at Khao Tiew and impossible-to-snag reservations at Elena’s are just two signs that sleepy West Portal is a culinary hot spot. Fuel up with a latte at the newly opened Hardware Coffee Co. while you wait for your table at Thai-inspired brunch joint Tur. We’re big proponents of the “little treat” movement, so swing by George’s Donuts & Merriment for a bougie baked good for secondsies. Insider tip: The best thrifting in San Francisco might just be at West Portal’s Goodwill Boutique.

12:30 p.m. Lowrider celebration (opens in new tab) at de Young Museum

Now that you’re caffeinated, head north to Golden Gate Park and enjoy free Saturday admission to the de Young for Bay Area residents. This Saturday, the museum is staging a lowrider exhibition on the front lawn, plus family art making, film screenings, and DJ Brown Angel on the decks.

3 p.m. All Day I Dream (opens in new tab) at Golden Gate Park

Perhaps you’re looking for a Saturday afternoon that is less family-friendly and more feral. Take a stroll down the car-free JFK Promenade until you hit Hellman Hollow. DJs Lee Burridge, Enamour, and Facundo Mohrr are bringing the energy for a daytime rave in the park at a fraction of the cost of (sold out) Outside Lands tickets. The event ends at 7 p.m., but keep the party going at an associated late-night version (opens in new tab) at The Great Northern that lasts until 2 a.m.

Sunday, June 7

Forecast: Mostly sunny, high of 65

Sunday’s not-too-hot weather warrants a hop across the bay to Alameda, followed by a few low-key festivals right by the waterfront.

8 a.m. Pastries at the Ferry Building

Sunday mornings are for doing what San Franciscans do best: waiting in line for baked goods. Parachute Bakery opens at 8 a.m., so we recommend getting there then if you want your shot at one of the famed passion-fruit cube croissants. Wash it down with a Vietnamese cold brew from Red Bay Coffee.

9:20 a.m. Hop on the ferry to Alameda

Say goodbye to BART snafus and bridge tolls, because the Bay Ferry is so back. First departure is 9:20 a.m. — early bird gets the best vintage. See the full schedule here (opens in new tab).

9:45 a.m. Alameda Point Antiques Faire (opens in new tab) ($10)

After your scenic ride, arrive at the sprawling Alameda antique market. A 22-minute trip from SF brings you to the Main Street Alameda Ferry Terminal, which is just a short walk from the fairgrounds, where hundreds of vendors sell vintage clothing, secondhand homewares, and more. It’s huge, so take your time. Catch the 1:15 p.m. ferry back.

1:45 p.m. Juneteenth on the Waterfront (opens in new tab) at the Ferry Building

After all that treasure hunting, you’ll need some fuel. Upon your return from the East Bay, savor gumbo, barbecue, and upside-down cakes from Black-owned businesses during the Ferry Plaza Farmers Market’s Juneteenth pop-up.

2:45 p.m. Festa Italiana (opens in new tab) in North Beach

Hop on the 22 bus for a quick ride up to North Beach. Euro summer might not be in the budget this year, but this annual festival is the next best thing, with food stalls, crafts for sale, a dueling accordion showdown, and a theatrical pizza toss by Tony Gemignani of Tony’s Pizza Napoletana. If you’re in need of even more antics, head over to Cow Hollow for the Union Street Festival (opens in new tab) for music, food, and a chance to spot Adam Sandler (opens in new tab) at Little Original Joe’s.

Sunday scaries be damned — we say, make an evening of it. You are in San Francisco’s best nightlife neighborhood, after all. Grab a drink at Vesuvio Cafe and gander at the Gen Z cigarette revival taking place in Jack Kerouac Alley just outside.
