Goop Kitchen, the wellness-centric takeout restaurant concept by actor Gwyneth Paltrow, is opening one of its first dine-in locations in San Francisco after being takeout and delivery-only for five years. No opening date has been announced for the restaurant, located at 405 Howard St. in the Financial District.
A division of Paltrow’s once zeitgeist-defining wellness brand Goop, Goop Kitchen has more than a dozen locations in California. It arrived in the Bay Area in October, initially with three ghost kitchens in San Francisco, Sunnyvale and San Jose. Goop Kitchen recently added a fourth location at 5333 Adeline St. in Oakland, though the company has been promoting the opening on social media as in Berkeley. It is housed in Adeline Food Hall with delivery service Monday through Saturday.
A spokesperson for Goop Kitchen declined to answer questions about the dine-in restaurant.
Goop Kitchen promotes what it defines as “clean” eating — gluten- and seed oil-free, no refined sugars and no corn. Menu items include the Brentwood Chinese chicken salad, the “G-potle” taco crunch bowl, a turkey chili collab with health influencer Andrew Huberman, “Chef Kim’s magic mineral broth” and Mosey’s BBQ chicken pizza (a nod to Paltrow’s son), as well as rotisserie chicken dinners and a la carte proteins and veggies, including miso salmon and garlic roasted Japanese sweet potatoes.
“Clean” eating as a dietary approach is both undefined and not entirely supported by research. While “clean” eating advocates promote eating fruits, vegetables, beans and whole grains, more restrictive interpretations of the diet can increase nutrient deficiencies or disordered eating.
In recent years, seed oils, such as canola and sunflower, have been attacked by wellness influencers and U.S. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who state that they cause obesity and inflammation, despite a lack of scientific evidence for those claims.
For a New York Magazine review of Goop Kitchen in New York, critic Tammie Teclemariam wrote that she “wouldn’t call the flavor of anything I ordered particularly bold, but everything was tasty enough with competently cooked proteins and impeccable vegetables, which, in addition to the convenience, should be expected at these prices.”
