Re “Public makes disdain for City Hall plain in rejecting ‘second homes’ tax” (June 4): Voters have noted that the City Council’s standard response to budget deficits is to seek more funding by any means. The voter response to Measure A should send a strong contrary message.
There is an alternative approach. It’s called the reduction of expenditures. And it should include (a) changing retirement benefits for new hires to be based on defined contributions, (b) eliminating “nice-to-have” staff positions, (c) freezing salaries until they are competitive with the private sector, (d) removing restrictions that limit competition for purchasing services and often require the use of labor unions and (e) re-examining the necessity of performing tasks with unproven or marginal benefits.
It appears that the people we elected either don’t care or don’t know how to responsibly manage the job that they were elected to do. If they can’t do the job, they should resign and let voters choose more qualified replacements.
