A man found dead in the street last week in San Francisco’s Excelsior District has been identified as Edson Abraham Morales Garay, a 26-year-old city resident, authorities said.
Garay was found on the 900 block of Geneva Avenue on June 3, according to San Francisco police. Officers responded about 6:23 a.m. to meet with paramedics about a person who had been found dead in the street.
Police initially said the cause of death had not been determined and that the investigation was preliminary. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner later identified Garay as the person who died.
Walk San Francisco, a pedestrian safety advocacy group, described the death as a collision and said it was the third pedestrian death on Geneva Avenue in the last three years.
“Our hearts break for the victims and their loved ones,” Jodie Medeiros, executive director of Walk SF, said in a statement. “People are dying simply walking in our city.”

Less than an hour before the Geneva Avenue death, San Francisco police responded to a fatal pedestrian crash near Brannan and Seventh streets in the South of Market neighborhood.
Walk SF said the two deaths brought San Francisco’s pedestrian fatality count to 11 so far this year, though city traffic fatality data is not updated in real time.
