SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie announced Tuesday that the number of tent encampments in the city has dropped 53% since he took office in January 2025, citing the latest quarterly count conducted by the SF Department of Emergency Management.

The count, which took place in May, found a record low 40 tents and 75 structures, down from 61 tents and 94 structures that were found in February. The number of RVs and other large vehicles dropped to a record low of 259, down 31% from the February count.

“We’re getting people and families that are living in these terrible conditions in the RVs, we’re getting a lot of them into housing,” Lurie said in a video posted to social media.

The mayor’s office attributes the reduction in large vehicles to a city program that aims to place families living in RVs into permanent housing.

“Since the program launched last year, 151 households been placed into more stable environments, including 114 transitioned into housing,” wrote the mayor’s office.
