Prosecutors say the baby was drowned in Nov. 2018 by his grandmother, Beant Dhillon, who told investigators she acted because of the shame she believed her unwed daughter’s pregnancy brought to the family.

Dhillon is currently serving a 25-year-to-life sentence after she was sentenced in 2021.

Jagsir Singh, the father of the teenage mother, told police he wasn’t home during the birth and death of the baby but was told what had happened afterward, according to a police report. He told police he allowed the baby to be buried in the backyard and did not seek medical attention for his daughter because he was worried his wife would kick him out of the house and he might be deported, the report stated.

He was arrested on allegations of aiding a felon, felony child abuse, and conspiracy. He was released on a $50,000 bail. Singh committed suicide in March 2019.
